The Curriculum

The University Scholars Curriculum is a compacted, enriched scope and sequence designed to prepare students with the skills and background knowledge to begin Advanced Placement courses in 9th and 10th grades.

The content is scaffolded on the Core Knowledge sequence and adjusted to meet the accelerated pace and needs of gifted students.

The University Scholars curriculum focuses on synapse building through problem-solving, rich experiences and challenging content. Lessons are designed to be interdisciplinary, engaging, project-based and to spark intellectual curiosity. Assignments and assessments will engage the higher critical thinking skills described in Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Bloom identified six levels within the cognitive domain, from the simple recall or recognition of facts, as the lowest level, through increasingly more complex and abstract mental levels. The primary methodology used to deliver the curricula is an inquiry-based learning method sometimes referred to as 'Discovery Learning.'

Discovery Learning engenders the development of a lifelong love of learning. This methodology encourages students to ask questions and formulate their own tentative answers and to deduce general principles from practical examples or experiences. Students are given problems to solve where learners draw on their own experiences and prior knowledge to discover the truths that are to be learned. Students step into the shoes of historical figures, scientists and literary characters to face the challenges and problem solve the real-life questions of history and the human experience. Discovery Learning does not take the place of learning facts and content; rather, it requires the student take the learned facts and content and apply them to solve a problem or construct a paradigm.
